Drug Market Intervention (DMI) Initiative Trainings

BJA is accepting applications from interested teams in response to its Request for Commitment solicitation for the Drug Market Intervention (DMI) initiative trainings. The initiative consists of a continuum of three trainings for up to ten sites. Each site team is comprised of a law enforcement official, a local prosecutor, a community leader, and a social service provider. Each team will receive a site visit from a BJA technical assistance provider along with ongoing support to assist local teams adapt the DMI model to their unique local context. National partners also are currently developing a training manual that interested jurisdictions can use to implement DMI locally. Applications are due August 21, 2008.

Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-Gang Training

On September 26–28, 2007, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sponsored the Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-Gang Training pilot in Dover, Delaware. Approximately 160 law enforcement agents and criminal justice practitioners attended the training, which presented the gang expertise of DOJ law enforcement and criminal justice professionals in a comprehensive curriculum. Intervention, prevention, suppression and reentry strategies were presented, as well as a briefing on national and regional gang trends, a community gang problem assessment, and tips for working with cooperating witnesses and confidential informants. Due to the success of the pilot program and the positive feedback and suggestions received from attendees, twelve Anti-Gang Training sessions are scheduled to be offered during 2008 and 2009. Waterloo Felon Sentenced for Possession of Ammunition (4/7/2008) A Waterloo, Iowa man charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition has been sentenced to 70 months in prison. Prior felony convictions for possession with intent to deliver marijuana while in possession of a firearm prohibit the man from carrying a gun or ammunition. More>

Arkansas Takes Preemptive Measures Against Gangs (4/7/2008) In response to growing local gang presence, schools in Northwest Arkansas will soon start teaching the G.R.E.A.T (Gang Resistance Education and Training) curriculum to their students. A Project Safe Neighborhoods grant will also fund databases to track suspected gang members. More>
